Lack of reliable post-fire recovery mechanisms makes the iconic Tasmanian conifer

چکیده

Athrotaxis cupressoides is an iconic Tasmanian palaeoendemic conifer that vulnerable to fire. A survey of three populations burnt by severe fire in 2016, conducted 1 year post-fire, found 33% stems were still alive, with many surviving suffering some canopy scorch. We re-surveyed these quantify delayed mortality, resprouting, and presence juveniles, determine whether impacts can be reliably assessed after year. applied measures severity: scorched, consumed, the minimum twig diameter neighbouring shrubs. overall stem survival 2020 was 31%, 97% dead 4 years post-fire had died within first Our best predictor mortality percentage scorched. Overall, 1.8% resprouted, but severely did not resprout. Juveniles present ~9.9% trees 2017, only 2020. conclude A. are unusually sensitive, rather, species’ vulnerability results from its lack reliable recovery mechanisms. This study shows fire-caused possibly earlier. Interventions such as sowing seed or transplanting seedlings could necessary re-establish fire-killed populations.

The Tasmanian Legacy of Man and Fire

The vegetation of Tasmania is complex and much of it is in a state of disclimax. At the time of European settlement, the proportion of non-forest open vegetation was 370/0, about 5% ofthis at high altitudes. In the present interglacial climate, in regions ofhigh rainfall, where rainforest dominance might be expected, approximately 45% carries sedgeland, grassland, shrub communities and wet scle...

What makes an Image Iconic? A Fine-Grained Case Study

A natural approach to teaching a visual concept, e.g. a bird species, is to show relevant images. However, not all relevant images represent a concept equally well. In other words, they are not necessarily iconic. This observation raises three questions. Is iconicity a subjective property? If not, can we predict iconicity? And what exactly makes an image iconic? We provide answers to these ques...

Cajander larch (Larix cajanderi) biomass distribution, fire regime and post-fire recovery in northeastern Siberia

Climate change and land-use activities are increasing fire activity across much of the Siberian boreal forest, yet the climate feedbacks from forest disturbances remain difficult to quantify due to limited information on forest biomass distribution, disturbance regimes and post-disturbance ecosystem recovery. Our primary objective here was to analyse post-fire accumulation of Cajander larch (La...

Simulation of Oil Reservoirs Driving Indices and Recovery Mechanisms

Different recovery mechanisms are activated during the production from reservoirs. Wells sometimes are kept with the injection. Therefore the evaluation of injection indices depended on material injection, seems to be necessary. This study is going to determine the drive indices for a reservoir by making a model using Eclipse. The model consists a gas cap and aquifer, in which there is an injec...
